This pair of single-leaf bascule bridges over the South Branch of the Chicago River are powerful industrial icons standing sentinel over an almost vanished heavy rail presence near Chicago's downtown. The near bridge has been abandoned and no doubt owes its continued existence to its high demolition cost.
